The Castle’s History

During Middle Age, in Spoleto’s mountainous territory, were built many defensive works, among them the Pupaggi Castle, which in the course of time, because of its geographic position, changed its urbanistic arrangement into a kind of fortified village. Noteworthy is the peculiar basement which dates back to the XI th century, whose unsquared stone vaults have been fully reconstructed The Castle was important also in recent times as hunting place for “ Palombe “shootings. For its historic and architectural weight it has been bound by the Ministry for historic Goods and cultural activities.

Leggend

Amid loves and old arguments arose the legend of the “ Bella Pupa “, young lady at the Castle who was disputed with bloody fights by the nobles of the neighbourhood.

In case arms might prevail over love, the people of Pupaggi protected the Pupa over the high castle tower with bloody fights which are still narrated as a myth or a legend by the old shepherds of the area.

From this tale started the name of Pupaggi, in memory of the noble and beautiful Pupa.
